Navigating Dyslexia: Effective Coping Strategies for Adult Success
Since dyslexia is not
curable, dyslexic children grow up to be "fantastic creative"
dyslexic adults. Although if the right learning support was not given during
school age, some dyslexic adults might still struggle with work life.
I hope struggling dyslexic adults find these coping
strategies helpful๐;
- Utilise applications like Grammarly and google doc
to help edit your work.
- Use the notepad app on your phone to jot down
spontaneous ideas; a journal can also come in handy.
- Always
have a notebook and different colours of pen with you, especially during
meetings, conferences or training (taking photos or videos of presentations can
also come in handy).
- Have a
ready to go audio dictionary on your phone, tablet and laptop.
- Use
text-to-speech applications like speechify, Elsa, text reader, etc.
- READ,
READ, READ a lot ๐ค; reading improves your vocabulary.
Practice mentally analysing what you have read.
- When
reading, use different colours of highlighter to mark out important points (use
the same colour for facts that go together).
- Meditate
especially after reading or when planning for a task. Meditating helps you
create a mental representation of the bigger picture.
- Develop
the habit of writing regularly; it could be an essay, article or personal
journal.
- Rehearse
and repeat your presentation over and over (no cramming).
- Regularly practise the things you struggled with as a child (mental arithmetic,
map reading, spontaneous direction indication, analogue clock reading, etc.).
- When
listening to instructions, repeat them loud or in a whisper. If it’s a long
instruction, jot down.
- Finally,
do you; everyone has a coping strategy, find yours and create MAGIC.๐ช
**If you are still struggling with
spelling, learn the sounds of the alphabet (this can be learnt online),
practice blending sounds to form words and make conscious effort to blend
correctly when writing or reading.
